PBAs and Oral Assignments
In all World Language classes, we give assessments called PBAs (Performance Based Assessments). Students must have 4 of these assessments each semester. They are generally oral assessments, but one written PBA may be given each semester. PBAs consist of a student being read a prompt and then reponding to the prompt orally or in writing. Brainstorming time is limited, and students may not use notes or write scripts to help their performance. These are county mandated assessments, and they are graded according to a county rubric, which is attached below. PBAs make up their own category in a student's grade, and they are worth 30% of the overall grade.
PBA rubrics are an excellent tool, because they focus on a student's ability and what he or she produces during the assessment. Points are rewarded for the students' demonstration of their abilities, and they are not taken away for individual errors. Because of the positive nature of this evaluation system, I prefer to use these rubrics for the majority of my students' oral assessments. I have attached a copy of the rubric to this page so that you can familiarize yourself with it and understand how your student is being evaluated.

PBAs are not the only oral assessments given in Spanish class. The remainder of the oral assessments is divided between "Major Assessments" and "Minor Assessments" in my gradebook, depending on the nature of the assessment. Examples of major oral assessments include dialogues, rehearsed oral presentations, and skits. Minor assessments include listening comprehension activities and other less time intensive assignments.
